Sunday 5th May – The Trail Napoleon at Ajaccio
Early Sunday morning in Ajaccio saw the depart of the 19th edition of the Trail Napoleon, a fantastic mountain race that always generates a lot of interest.
It set out from the town, famously the birthplace of Napoleon.
The itinerary makes it’s way swiftly up to the nearby mountain ridge that offers balcony views of the sea. The hill side is full of wild spring flowers at this time of the year, giving it some lovely colour and sweet perfume. The highest part of the trail can be shrouded in mist, in contrast to the lower coastal paths, that waft with sea breeze and crashing waves.
There were 1200 participants, some from Corsica but also those who came from further afield, making the journey especially to compete here. Participating in this race gives you qualifying points towards the famous UTMB Mont Blanc race. The winner of the 43 kilometres was Vincent Viet who completed it in the outstanding time of 3h26.
There are three different races to choose from…
The Imperial – 43km +1700m
The Classique – 23km +1200m
The Trail des Aiglons (Eagles) – 11km +400m
